How To Stay Out Of Debt Living Your Dream

What did you want to be when you grew up?  Do you remember laying on the grass looking up at the sky on a clear blue day?  That is when I would dream of what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Apart, from trying to figure out what animal I could find in the clouds, I would dream.  This is where you hear the soft music playing in the background then suddenly the needle scratches across the record and comes to an abrupt hult.

Wait a minute.  Let's be real.  The one thing they don't tell you when you are growing up is that life comes with debt.  Or, does it?  It doesn't have to if you learn early on in life how to stay out of debt and still live your dreams.

Here is my How-To Lesson's of "How to stay out of debt and still live your dream", Southern Style.  I grew up in the South and so did 7 generations of my relatives going all the way back to the landing of the Mayflower.

I was raised the good old fashioned way back in the early 60's in a rural part of Central Florida.  It was a good life to me.  We were considered poor by national standards, but we never went without the basic necessities of life.

I did not grow up dreaming of big fancy houses or how to get rich quick.  Rather, I grew up loving the outdoors and appreciating my God given right to be who I wanted to be and to think how I wanted to think based on the values I was raised with, not with the values I saw on TV or heard in school.

I learned quickly that what you see on TV or learn in school is not going to help you cope with the day to day of dealing with your workmates or how to be an adult once you graduate from high school.

Lesson 1: Eat Healthy

You are probably wondering how this will keep you out of debt.  If, the light bulb has not come on yet, let me enlighten you.  Humor me for a minute while I tell you my story.

Growing up in the 60's puts me in my 50's.  That was a time when you could still grow a garden without killer pesticides being embedded in our seeds.

Since, I did not grow up in the city I had clean fresh air to breath.  Well water with no chlorine or fluoride added.  A big yard to run and play in and pets to love and learn about.

I used to eat at fast food places until my neurologist told me to stop.  He said and I quote "how do you feel after you eat a meal there"?  I said awful.  He said, "Exactly".   "They put lots of salt, sugar and fat in so it tastes good."

That was in the mid 90's after I had my daughter.  With my 2nd pregnancy I gained 50 pounds in about 3 months.  I am 5'6" and small bone frame.  The only way I knew that I was gaining weight was when one day my jeans did not fit no matter how I tried to squeeze my bottom into them.  Giggle!

I stopped and pondered my diet.  What had changed I thought to myself.  Well, let's see.  Maybe all that chocolate candy that you started eating since you started taking care of your Uncle is the culprit.

So, I changed my diet and started eating organic.  That was a good thing because a turn of events happened that went like this.

I started hemorrhaging one day and after a visit to my doctor he said you probably had a miscarriage considering you don't gain weight easily unless you are pregnant.

Long story short.  I did have a miscarriage and knew I needed to make some changes in my diet in order to loose the weight.  A good friend introduced me to the eat right for your blood type diet.  A book written by Dr. D'Adamo.
Lesson 2: Exercise

I started following my blood type, O and began a mild exercise program of playing tennis a few days a week with another family.  Within 3 months I lost from 170 pounds down to 138 pounds and kept at that weight until my Lyme disease illness in 2005.

Just how much does it cost to go organic?   Eating organic did not add a high increase to our budget.  We stopped eating out so much and ate more at home.  You soon find out how much eating out costs when you stop doing it.

Lesson 3:

When you have a sudden turn of events in your life the debt can come with it.  In my case, it was doctor bills that suddenly put us in debt of over $10,000 in a years time.

I used a consumer counseling service agency and paid off the debt in 3 years time.  My husband is the only bread winner in the family and he is self-employed in the remodeling industry.

They worked within our budget and with the doctor's and hospital's to lower our monthly payments.  At that time we had no credit card debt. (it works for credit cards too)

Lesson 4: Cash Envelope System
With my Lyme disease came more debt as the years went by.  In 2013 my kidney's started to fail and I was loosing weight fast.  I had to find help.
Since, I only can use natural medicine which can be expensive because health insurance does not cover this form of treatment. Thanks to a good friend I found Dr. Donald Mayfield who saved me from becoming bedridden.   He was 76 years old at the time and I was praying that he did not die.  I know that might seem morbid but let's face it.  No one knows when they are going to die.
Within one year and 6 months time he had me looking and feeling better than I had in the last 10 years.  But, the dreaded fear of him not being around long enough to see my treatment through happened the year of May 2015.

During that year and a half I had to use credit cards to pay for my treatments.  I wanted to get out of debt but this time I decided not to go the consumer counseling route.

After, researching online I found this method called: Cash Envelope System.  There are many folks who write about it and have podcasts on social media.
I decided to use this system and to make my own pretty custom color envelopes to budget with using my own get out of debt program.  I make them in every color in the rainbow and neutral colors like brown, black and white.
I'm happy to say that I really like making a budget and writing out the steps I need to take to get out of debt and live my dreams.
The trick to staying out of debt once you finish paying off everything on your list is to not get credit cards ever again.  Pay only cash for what you want to buy and stick to a budget.

I estimate it will be another 2 years before we are debt-free.  As I get each item on my list marked off it feels so liberating.  I can feel the freedom coming and living my dream is just around the corner.  Being debt-free once again.

Embroidery 101: February #mygiftoflove2017

Are you ready for Spring?  It is one of my favorite times of year. One more month to go and it will be here.  In the meantime, #Mygiftoflove2017 embroidery project is off to an excellent start.  If, I can keep this up each month I will be so happy. I finished my January block and just have a few more stitches to fill in on February and I can move on to March.

I look forward to working on it every night while sitting on the couch next to my husband.  We have turned off the TV and just enjoy having pleasant conversation together about our day.  As I stitch he reads the bible or catches up on an article off of our favorite bible study website, jw.org.

I can look back at the end of this year with a great since of accomplishment.

So, let's dive into the world of hand embroidery.

Learning to embroider may seem daunting but it doesn't have to be.  With the internet you can now find beginner embroidery 101 stitches all over the worldwide web.  I like to look on Pinterest for inspiration and to find new stitches to add.

Mostly, I like to do my own thing but do it with different stitch styles.  You'll notice on my January block I added a little bit of everything.
There are french knots, stem stitch, back stitch, wheel, satin, loopy and straight stitches used with every word or image seen.  I hand draw the images and words and free hand the embellishments like grass, flowers and vines.

If, you want to get started I would suggest buying just the basics at your local craft store and a beginner embroidery book with lots of pictures.  And, look on Pinterest like I did for more basic stitches to learn.

Here is a basics embroidery supply list I would suggest you start off with.
  • hoops in different sizes (small, medium, large)
  • embroidery needles in various sizes
  • a basic pack of embroidery floss (brights or pastels)
  • a stamped embroidery project kit for beginner
  • Embroidery booklet for beginners with basic stitches
  • Pincushion
  • Scissors
  • Needle threader
Hoops: I like using the small hoop the best because I can concentrate in one area of small space and then move the hoop around as I go.  It is also easier on your joints if you have arthritis or poor circulation.

Needles:  I use a embroidery needle that I can fit the threader through and at least 6 strands of floss.  I rarely use 6 strands but if I do I want to be able to thread it easily.  Most projects suggest using 3 strands.

Floss:  Now, don't go crazy on buying the floss.  They have a whole wall dedicated at Joann's and I tell you it is addicting.  DMC is the best company I've found for a delightful variety of colors and has the best price.

Stamped Embroidery Kit for beginners:  Here is a cute little kit I found and have listed in my Etsy shop, Pioneer Fundraiser.  It is a used kit but it has all the supplies inside and will get you off to a great start.  Fill it in by color with a step by step instruction sheet.

The pincushion, scissors and needle threader can all be purchased at a local craft store very reasonably.

Congrats! You've just joined thousands of other woman around the world who are keeping this hand sewing art form alive!  By taking a few minutes every day you can accomplish your project in a few months time.

Let me know when you start by posting a comment below.

P.S.  Check out some of my past projects that I have completed.  I started out with counted cross-stitch and worked my way to hand embroidery.

Weekend Survival For Couples

What do you like best about your days off?

For my husband and I it is filled with so many things that need to be done together.  You see I have a debilitating chronic illness which limits how much I can get done in a day.

As an artisan it is hard to stop designing and making things even on your days off.  That is because you love what you do.
But, we all need time off to let our brains do something different.

It's called R&R!

So, for us our weekends or any 2 days in a row with no secular work is like a mini vacation.  We use this time wisely.  We don't have a written schedule, but I am working on one.  That is a whole post in itself.

Instead of just sleeping the 48 hours away or being a couch potato here are some fun and productive tips that are easy to do based on your limitations.  If, I can do it, you can do it!

#1 Do Your Chores First

Put on your cutest handmade apron and get busy.

Let's be honest.  We all dread doing our chores before fun.  Am I right?!  No matter how young or old we are our mind wants to do all the fun stuff first.  Like eat our dessert first etc..

But, doing the chores first like cleaning your craft room, organize the garage or shed gives you a sense of accomplishment and takes all the pressure out of your mind.

#2 Meal Planning

Sit down together and plan out a month or week's worth of meals.  If, you are tired of the same old thing try one of the new home food delivery services like Hello Fresh.

 #3 Make Personalized Note Cards

You know all those photos you keep taking with your phone or digital camera?  Turn them into personalized note cards of your adventures and use them instead of store bought cards.

                               #4 Visit Your State Parks
Now that you've gotten all your chores done.  It's time for some fun outdoors that won't cost a fortune.  Make it a goal to visit as many state parks as you can in one year.

This topic is near and dear to my heart.  I feel like a kid again.  I don't like traveling out of the USA.  I've done it and I like keeping my feet on the ground and I like to be able to speak to the people at the businesses I frequent.

We used to have annual passes to all the theme parks in Florida within 50 miles of us.  I know Walt Disney World parks like the back of my hand.  I am all moused out. lol

Busch Gardens, Tampa is also a very familiar stomping grounds.  My Grandmother lived right across the street.  We would walk to the corner and look both ways and then run across and use our cousins pass to get in.  Back then you could get one person in for free.  Cool right!

Personally, I just don't have a desire for them anymore.  But, I never get tired of being in nature and taking in all of God's beautiful creation.  It not only relaxes me but it reminds me of his power and love for humans.

To make it really fun we purchased the state park passport book for Florida State Parks.  Check in your state to see what they have available to make your visits more enjoyable.

Most state parks also have cabin rentals and camping sites.  So, far this year my husband and I have visited Silver Springs state park and the glass bottom boat tours.  And, Blue Springs State park where the manatee's visit in the winter months.

So, I have 2 park stamps in my passport book.  Giggle!  I am a homeland traveler of state parks.

                                     #5 Pay It Forward

This pay-it-forward idea has been around for a very long time.  It can be any act of kindness that you choose to do for someone else.  It can be for someone you know or for someone you barely know.

Think of a neighbor who is ill or a friend of a friend that lost their job etc...put together a little care package like the one I did with my handmade products in the photo above and gift it to them.

What makes it so cool is the fact that there is more happiness in giving love than in receiving love.  Do you know why?  Read more about it here.

Let me know if you have done any of the tips that I shared on your weekend or 2 days off from work in the comments box below.

Weekend survival for couples made easy.  Life doesn't have to be hard it just has to be productive to be enjoyed.

Is Your Pets Food Causing The Skin Issues? See What My Research Shows...

Calling all pet owners.  If you own cats or dogs with skin issues you need to read this post.  We know the cause and the solution.  Read on.
After, years of research with my own skin issues, eczema, my doctor and I were able to narrow it down to fungus and foods feeding the fungus.
Spencer wearing his cute dog harness made by my friend Sally of Bloomingtailsdogduds

I went on a strict diet of eating no sugar or starchy foods and started using different fungus killing herbs.  After, 4 years we have finally got it under control.  Yay!
I knew fungus can affect our pets too.  So, I changed our dog's food too so many times and the problem just kept getting worse instead of better.
After, years of research I found a website called Nzymes and they had the answers I was looking for.  They even have a check-list you can fill out to see just what the issue is with your pet.
Finally, I had answers and they were just the same as for me. Fungus!  So, I bought one of the recommended brands on the list that I found at a local pet store.
The cost is just the same as any other brand but the ingredients are far better.  He loves it.  It is called Fromm Gold for small dog breeds.  Not all stores carry it so head to the website above at Nzymes and you'll find their store locator helpful.

My poor Yorkie, Spencer has been having the same issues for just about as long as I have.  I also bought their protocol remedies for his the fungus and gut health.
He starts on it next week and will continue on it for life.

I also suspect there is mold and fungus in our house that we can not see. We replaced the a/c duct work years ago so I know that is not where it is coming from.  I keep the house pretty clean so I know that is not where it is coming from.  But, there is nothing I can do about it outside.
But, I can do something about it on my patio and front porch where it loves to grow.
I finally did more research and bought a product to kill all mold and fungus and it prevents any from growing back.
It is called Mold Control as you can see below.  Find it at Lowe's home improvement stores.

Mold Control

To further prove that this stuff really works we tested in the apartment that my daughter recently moved into.  It is a lovely community in Orange City, FL but it is poorly maintained.
She used teatree oil and a raft of other essential oils and made up a cleaning solution.  It helped but you could still smell mold.
After, spraying this mold control under the sinks in bathroom and kitchen it smells so much better.
I can now visit without getting a sore throat or burning itching eyes.  Yay!

If you try any of my research on your pet skin issues I would love to hear about it.  Leave me a comment below and I'll respond a.s.a.p.

Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts and happenings in my life.  I don't know much but what I do know I share!

Sending You Sunshine,

Marsha J and Spencer-buddy

Give Yourself The Gift Of "Love": A 12 Month Series #giftoflove2017

Do you ever feel like you could show more love to your family and friends?  Or, that you need to receive more love?  Give yourself the gift of love in 2017 - a 12 month series where I will share my journey of giving more love to bring myself more happiness.  Are you in?  If so, use the hashtag #giftoflove2017 when you share this post to your social media.

January 1, 2017 marked the first day of a challenge I joined on social media called: "1 year of stitches 2017".  It was started by a young woman I met on IG from a post I read on Twitter.
Since, I am skilled at embroidery and was in great need of some "me time" I decided to read more about this challenge.  After, I saw how easy it was and all I had to do was make some stitches daily for 365 days I decided to join in the fun. #1yearofstitches2017

That is not the end of my why? story.  How did I come up with this idea to give yourself the gift of love?  It had nothing to do with the movie.  It all came from a song I saw posted on FB with Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand called: "Tell Him"
In that song there is a line that says: "Love will be the gift you give yourself".  The rest is about to become my history of 2017 and beyond.

January I am giving away fabric bookmarks that I handmade to 12 of my friends and family members.  Since, this is a 12 month challenge to give yourself the gift of love I decided on gifting 12 handmade items each month.
This bible bookmark brings me to the real heart of the matter of this topic.  The words recorded in this divine book of wisdom reveals the true meaning; Matthew 22:37-39 and Acts 20:35 give us a clue as to what kind of giving this involves.  It is not in word but in deed that we can give to others and ourselves the gift of love.

You can also find each of the bookmarks that I will be gifting in my Etsy shop, MarketsofSunshine.  If, you want to use them yourself to gift this month feel free to hop on over to my shop.  I also offer a personalized option to add 1 metal letter charm or 1 iron on initial.

I have 7 bookmarks made for this month and just need to make 5 more for this challenge of #giftoflove2017.

My first bookmark is on it's way to a new friend I met on IG who lives in Broken Bow, OK.  She was attacked by dogs while out walking in her neighborhood.  I thought it would be a great 'get well' wishes gift to send her along with a collection of my other handmade gifts.
She is going to post it on her IG page when she gets the package later this week.  I'll let you know when she does.  Follow me on IG at @marketssunshine

P.S. I am also making a 12 block quilt out of vintage hankies for my bed.  So, how will you give yourself the gift of love in 2017?  Post below and let me know in the comments box.

Don't forget when you share this give yourself the gift of love post to use the #giftoflove2017 hashtag too.
